Barnhem is the Swedish word for Home For Children. The home for children and families in need was founded by Narin and Maria Florén Daengtakote as a result of the December 26 tsunami that hit, amongst other places, Thailand. However, we do not only help victims directly affected by the tsunami - many people were already poor and exposed before the tragedy. Families with children, as well as children on their own, live in the home, but all have poverty as a common denominator. Some families were separated and made homeless by the tsunami; others have been abandoned by the father or the primary income earner. Some children have been seriously neglected by their parents and others are “just” very poor. We do not want to tear families apart, quite the opposite. Our most important work is to keep the children and their relatives together. We want to be a family and a home for the children and their relatives. We are not a permanent solution but, during the time they live with us, we will work to find the best individual solution for each person to help them get back to a normal life.
